#TheRightWay is a bullying awareness and kindness campaign that grew out of an original music project. “The Right Way” is a duet I wrote in 2013 featuring two young people struggling with acceptance, empathy, and bullying. I wrote the song to help paint recognition that we are all the same, we feel the same pain, but we might not realize it.
First things first, my producer, Rich Aveo, and I decided to bring “The Right Way” to Lakehouse Recording Studios in Asbury Park, New Jersey in November 2014. My musical counterpart and friend, Jerzy Jung, agreed to sing the part of the second character. I was lucky enough to have Rich Aveo (piano), Eric Cooper (cello), Anthony Freda (drums), and Jerzy Jung (vocals) volunteer their talents toward an initiative that was just beginning to unfold.
Vince Inciong, music teacher at Middlesex High School in NJ, had been working with me for over a year, inviting me into his classroom as a guest performance/songwriting instructor. He wanted to bring “The Right Way” song to his students. It was a hit. We saw an opportunity to finally create the campaign we had always envisioned to propel the message. Vince volunteered to shoot and edit the campaign video. Rich Aveo volunteered to capture the audio and compose the score. Mr. I’s students valiantly approached the interview stool surrounded by tall lighting equipment and two cameras. We asked them to volunteer their opinion on what it means to treat others the right way.
An awesome extension of #TheRightWay is our music video directed by Ian J. Keeney and choreographed and performed by Danielle Nicolosi and Erica Russo from L.A. Dance in Lincroft, NJ. This lyrical dance interpretation is absolutely stunning and is further proof that through creativity, we can spread awareness. We are proud to add that the music video took home the Home Grown Music Video Award at the Garden State Film Festival and the Rising Star Award at the Ridgewood Film Festival, it also screened at the Asbury Music in Film Festival and the Rahway Film Festival. Both the campaign video and music video garnered the attention of PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center, National Dance Week Foundation’s Kicks for Kindness, News12 NJ Spotlight TV, and Dance Magazine’s video-of-the-month.
What can you do? I humbly ask for your participation in spreading the word. Share the video, share the sentiment, share kindness.
